
Prior to my freshman year of college at the University of Delaware, my lifestyle was active and athletic. I was an avid runner, but during the course of the school year I started to develop back pain, although I didn't know the source of the pain at the time. I lived with the pain for nearly 15 years and had limited mobility that lasted into my early thirties. During this time, I went to see a few orthopedic doctors, but never a rheumatologist. It wasn't until I was referred to a rheumatologist for another medical condition that I was diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis (AS).
Finding the right treatment was a key step towards my disease management. I’m committed to raising awareness of AS and informing others that there are options out there.
